Thanks Karell I may have to reinstall Windows XP on my home system, I have had a good luck at the Dell support documents on this and did not understand why I had to install the Chipset. Do I need them for a Dimension 4500? I think the Dell documents maybe missing a section on how to reinstall the Dell help stuff (the Dell online bits under help and support) How do I do that? My scanner has stopped working with a TWAIN error. The scanner works fine on a different PC so there are no hardware issues. Somehow my home Dell PC Windows XP installation has got messed up. I have reinstalled all the scanner software and drivers but still get the TWAIN error. Looks like a re-install of XP is required which I am not that keen to do!
Appetiser, Yes you do need to install the chipset drivers for the 4500. They are not native to XP and are not installed by anything else. You can find the chipset drivers here.
Dell Documents are missing from Help and Support. This is normal if you reinstall the application.
Visit the following thread for more information, here. Scanner stopped working. When installing the scanner, make sure you have WindowsXP compatible drivers. Go to the scanner makers web page to possibly get them.
Read the install instructions on how to properly install the scanner under XP. If the scanner does not have XP compatible software or drivers, it will probably not work. Karell, I phoned Canon re my scanner problem and they believe it is an issue with my Dell PC. This is because if I try installing and using the driver / software on my laptop it all works fine. Canon believe I have a problem with the power being too low from the USB sub-system. Any known issues with the USB sub-system / drivers on Dimension 4500's? Any suggestions on how to test or is there a newer driver available for the USB?
According to device manager I have an Intel USB host controller with Microsoft driver 5.1.2600.0 Thanks Appetiser. Appetiser, 'This is because if I try installing and using the driver / software on my laptop it all works fine.'
What operating system is your laptop using? What operating system are the drivers/software for? Windows 98 or ME drivers will not work under WindowsXP. You must have Windows XP specific drivers and software.
'Canon believe I have a problem with the power being too low from the USB sub-system.' If that is the case, then you need to get a USB powered HUB. This would provide the power you need for components that require more power from the USB ports. 'Any known issues with the USB sub-system / drivers on Dimension 4500's?
Any suggestions on how to test or is there a newer driver available for the USB? According to device manager I have an Intel USB host controller with Microsoft driver 5.1.2600.0' There are no known USB issues. There is no newer driver for the USB ports. Message Edited by DELL_Karell on 12:21 PM. Karell Thanks for the reply.
My laptop is a Compaq running Windows XP professional and my home PC is a Dell Dimension running Windows XP home edition. The Canon drivers are certified for XP. The idea of the laptop test was to test the scanner hardware, cable etc. As the scanner works on my laptop it must be something specific to do with my home PC. Canon confirmed that there are known issues with SIS and Viatech USB components. The USB port should be able to give the power required by the scanner. Canon state you must connect directly and not via a USB hub.
Are there any SIS or Viatech components in the USB sub-system on a Dell Dimension 4500? If so this is the most likely cause and both SIS and Viatech have a fix that is released via the PC manufacturer. If there are no SIS or Viatech components then Canon believe that whoever the USB component manufacturer is that they are likely to be having the same issue as Viatech & SIS and I should go to my PC manufacturer for an update. Carport Diagnose Software Problem.
Sounds like there is a known issue with USB sub-systems that PC manufacturers are aware of, are Dell aware of this and if so are Dell 100% certain that their components are not affected? Thanks Appetiser.
Appetiser, I/O Controller Hub (ICH4) This is the chipset controler that is responsible for the USB handling. I belive it is Intel by design, so that would rule out the problem with the SIS or Viatech USB chipset controlers. 'Sounds like there is a known issue with USB sub-systems that PC manufacturers are aware of, are Dell aware of this and if so are Dell 100% certain that their components are not affected?'
I searched but found no information in any Dell database stating there is a problem with the USB controlers. A corrupt driver can cause a problem, so you may want to re-install the Chipset and USB 2.0 drivers for the system.
If that does not work, can you provide the TWAIN error you stated you get? --------------------------------------------------------------------- You can find the chipset drivers here. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is the information on reinstalling the USB 2.0 drivers. 1.Install the Drivers and Utilities CD: NOTE: If the Drivers and Utilities CD has already been installed, go directly to the Extract the Driver section. Many thanks Karell, I have printed off the instructions and will give it a go. The error message I get from any application that can open the scanner (Adobe Elements 2 and Arcsoft Photostudio) is: 'There is a TWAIN error.
Maybe the device is not connected'. The contents of the TWAIN.log are: TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk::AppInitialize - Reset Log TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk::OpenServer - Starting Thunker TWAIN_32.DLL - MESSAGE - CTwunk::CloseServer - Why Can't We Find The Thunker Window?
Karell I made some progress with these recommendations. I have reinstalled the chipset but this did not correct the problem. I did not reinstall the USB 2.0 drivers.
I followed the instructions up to 'locate and right click on universal serial bus (USB) controller with the yellow question mark next to it'. As none of the USB entries had any question marks against them I didn't know which item to select in device manager so ended up not reinstalling the USB drivers. This turned out to be an advantage because I did some more investigation and the Dell diagnostics CD has older USB driver versions than already installed on the Dell PC. XP Service pack 1 included an update to the USB files: usbport.sys, usbhub.sys, hccoin.dll and usbehci.sys. In c:windows system32 drivers the above files are version 5.1.2600.1106 from Service Pack 1. But also in c: i386 there are the same files at version 5.1.2600.41 (pre service pack1). I am confused now, can you explain the role of the i386 directory and is having an older version in this directory of the USB files an area for concern?
If so how do I update the i386 directory? Service pack 1 was applied before the scanner was installed. Ps, the laptop that works with the scanner also has SP1 applied, but oddly none of these files in c: i386. Appetiser, The I386 folder contains some driver files and system files that may be needed later. There should be no conflicts created by having more then one copy of the driver files. Since the scanner works on another system, all I can think of is that you have some file or registry corruption somewhere. I could not find any information on the Twain error, or what might cause this.
You can try a Windows XP repair install, but it requires a couple steps. The XP repair install takes out SP1 and may also take out some critical updates. 1.Backup all your data. 2.Perform the Repair install. 3.Reinstall the scanner drivers and test.
4.Reinstall SP1 and any critical updates. --------------------------------------------------------------------- How do I perform a Repair Reinstall of Microsoft速 Windows速 XP? Discussion Windows XP includes a new reinstall option, the Repair Reinstall. This option should be used when you have determined that the operating system files are corrupt, but you do not want to completely format the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. What a Repair Reinstall Will Do Delete all of the files normally installed by Windows XP. Reinstall those files from the Windows XP CD.
What a Repair Reinstall Will Not Do Completely rebuild the registry. A Repair Reinstall only writes to parts of the registry used by Windows XP. It will not completely rebuild the registry. Delete applications and user settings.
A Repair Reinstall will generally leave applications and user settings in the state they were before the Repair was attempted. All applications should remain functional, and all user settings should remain the way they were.
Fix issues caused by corrupt applications or user settings. Since the Repair Reinstall does not affect user or application settings, it will not repair issue stemming from those settings being corrupt. Solution Performing a Repair Reinstall 1.Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD or DVD drive. 2.Configure your system to boot to the CD drive.
3.Restart the computer. 4.When the computer prompts Press any key to boot from CD, press the (Spacebar). 5.The Welcome to Setup screen appears. 6.Press the (Enter) key to continue. 7.The system scans to see which hard drives are available.
8.When the license agreement screen appears, press the (F8) key to accept the license agreement. You should now see: (C: Windows ) Press F3 to quit, R to repair, ECS not to repair. You want to press R at this point. Windows will begin to load some files.asking you to please wait.
10.Setup will proceed with the installation sequence appropriate to the version of Windows XP being repaired. Once setup is complete, the system will restart. Karell, Sorry for the very late reply, just that as been so busy at work recently that I haven't had much spare time to sort out my home PC.
I summary my scanner now works fine but this required a total reinstall. Some lessons learnt that may be of value to the forum: 1) the repair install is of limited value. I tried this and performance was a dog and several things stopped working such as the modem! 2) A full install is not that difficult. Follow the advice on the Dell tech docs and it works OK (see below). 3) Install all the Dell specific bits before you install Windows XP SP1. I tried installing SP1 straight after installing XP the first time and then the Dell USB driver from the diags CD would not install.
I had to start the whole install from the beginning again. 4) A fresh install does not create the /i386 directory and saved me loads of disk space (/i386 directory must be something to do with the original Dell image installed on my PC). 5) A question for Dell, during the install my hard drive had two partitions a big NTFS partition and a small 30MB FAT partition. What is this small partition used for? Can I remove this next time I do a reinstall? 6) Keep a record of how you did the install, and then next time it will be a lot simpler. Kind regards Appetiser.
